A student forwarded this along to me. It has some great tips for novice and intermediate student alike for kicking technique. The key is keeping balance, never extend yourself so you cannot recover, or as beginning ranks sometimes do, fall on the floor.
When practicing the round kick, we (students within the USCDKA) strike with the ball of the foot when doing forms or breaking boards. We strike with the top of the foot during sparring or tournaments to prevent injury to our partners and to gain an extra few inches of reach to score.
