Taekwondo belt promotion in Regina Our new satellite school on March 15th, 2014 saw our very first Tae Kwon Do belt promotions at Regina Christian Tae Kwon Do. Students, under instructor Jessica Byker were put through their paces to earn their 9th and 8th gup belts! Testing candidates worked hard for over an hour, showing me that they were ready for their promotion. Students paid careful attention to detail in their stances and to the Read more…

Lyric Theatre hosts an evening of Tae Kwon Do

The Lyric Theatre here in Swift Current saw our Xtreme Youth Challenge giving a demonstration of the things that they have been learning in Tae Kwon Do My students made me very proud of them and what they have accomplished in a very short period of time. From performing Form 1 (Taegeuk il Chong) to weapons (bo staff, nunchuks and sais) to free sparring, they gave the audience an eyeful of what kids can do! Read more…

2nd Dan Black Belt testing

Well, testing is done and I am officially a 2nd degree black belt! I tested for my 2nd in Nelson BC, along with J. Byker who was testing for her 1st degree. It is quite an experience to test alongside one of your students! Grandmaster Begley, who is known for his fearsome personality, came up from Florida to act as Head Examiner. World’s Worst Martial Arts Demo?

World’s Worst Martial Arts Demo This video is making its rounds, causing people to laugh and make Tae Kwon Do look bad.  Unfortunately, he displays how not to break a board. After watching it, I felt: a)  mostly sorry for his students that had to watch him embarrass himself and the sport and b) saddened that someone wearing a 3rd Dan belt  showed such bad form. It begs the question of what did his students think Read more…

A great tutorial on kicking

A student forwarded this along to me. It has some great tips for novice and intermediate student alike for kicking technique. The key is keeping balance, never extend yourself so you cannot recover, or as beginning ranks sometimes do, fall on the floor. When practicing the round kick, we (students within the USCDKA) strike with the ball of the foot when doing forms or breaking boards. We strike with the top of the foot during Read more…
