How to do a cartwheel- The Beginner’s Guide

Students like tCartwheelo incorporate a little acrobatic routine into martial arts. Its fun, it looks pretty cool but more importantly, it helps the martial art student increase their flexibility and their range of motion.
One of the first acrobatic techniques is the cartwheel. One which most of our students ask how it is done. 

The cartwheel is a fundamental skill in martial arts that showcases strength, flexibility, and coordination. It’s a move that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and skill levels. In this article, we will break down the process of learning and performing a cartwheel, providing step-by-step instructions to help you master this impressive  maneuver.

Step 1: Warm Up
Before attempting any acrobatic move, it is crucial to warm up your body properly. Perform light cardiovascular exercises like jogging or jumping jacks to raise your heart rate. Then, focus on stretching exercises that target the major muscle groups used in the cartwheel, including the arms, shoulders, back, and legs. Stretching prepares your body for the movement and reduces the risk of injury.

Step 2: Starting Position
Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, keeping your arms relaxed by your sides. Identify your dominant hand, as it will be the one leading during the cartwheel. For example, if you are right-handed, your right hand will be your dominant hand.

Step 3: Preliminary Preparation
To develop a good foundation, practice the following preparatory exercises:

a) Lunge Position: Take a step forward with your dominant foot, bending your knee and keeping your back leg straight. This position helps improve balance and leg strength, which are essential for a successful cartwheel.

b) Hand Placement: Extend both arms overhead, reaching towards the ceiling. Now, bring your dominant hand down towards the floor, planting it on the ground beside your front foot, while keeping your fingers spread wide for stability.

Step 4: The Kick-Over
Once you are comfortable with the preliminary preparation, follow these steps to execute the cartwheel:

a) Kick-Over Preparation: With your dominant hand on the ground, transfer your weight onto that hand and foot, lifting your back leg off the ground. As you do this, simultaneously swing your non-dominant leg up and over your body, aiming to kick it over your dominant hand.

b) Weight Transfer: As your non-dominant leg passes over your body, transfer your weight onto your dominant hand and foot. Your body should be inverted at this point, with your arms fully extended.

c) Hand Placement: As your non-dominant leg reaches the peak of its arc, place your non-dominant hand on the ground, completing the motion. Your hands should be shoulder-width apart.

Step 5: Finishing the Cartwheel
To complete the cartwheel and return to an upright position, follow these steps:

a) Weight Transfer: Shift your weight onto your non-dominant hand and foot, allowing your dominant hand to lift off the ground.

b) Leg Movement: Simultaneously swing your dominant leg down towards the ground, aiming to land it in the same position where your non-dominant foot started.

c) Upright Position: As your dominant foot lands on the ground, straighten both legs and stand up straight, completing the cartwheel.

Step 6: Practice and Progression
To improve your cartwheel technique, practice regularly in a safe and spacious area. Start with slow and controlled cartwheels, gradually increasing your speed and fluidity. Focus on maintaining proper form, keeping your legs together and your body aligned. Over time, work on incorporating variations such as one-handed cartwheels or consecutive cartwheels to challenge yourself further.
